People from high and low are gathering around for the CosWalk for OCS! Some got to the venue to prep as early as 12 in the afternoon (the event starts at 6!) and it was a treat to see them get ready for the contest. A lot of chatter in the prep room and spirits were high and even though I couldn’t understand all of the Bahasa Indonesia, their excitement was evident.
Competitors from all walks of life were to be found, from store-bought costumes to hand-made ones. I prompted a contestant to ask and found out that she took one year to assemble her Nergigante Armor cosplay, wow! Two other contestants were 6 year old girls, who went as Maleficent from Disney and Lara Croft from Tomb Raider. Another veteran cosplayer said she had been cosplaying since 2012, that’s six years! There was a large variety of cosplayers, but they all shared one thing in common: the passion of cosplaying.
There were two categories, one was a competition and the other was a more casual CosWalk. Various cosplayers in beautifully made armors took part in the competition, showing off their crafted work and choreography with sound effects and animations, fully utilizing the stage and the exhibition hall’s speakers. Frea Mai and Rian CYD (both World Cosplay Summit 2016 Champions), Donna Visca (OMEN Ambassador & Cosplayer), Lola Zieta (Indonesia Representative for Tokyo Game Show – Cosplay Collection 2016) were featured guest judges. They were there to give commentary and constructive criticism to further elevate their cosplay for future competitions and events.
After that, the CosWalk was in full swing, an event for the casual cosplayers to show their passion to the crowd. The judges would then pick out ten of their favorites (out of the thirty nine contestants. Similarly, each of the contestants here had a short gimmick or choreography to bring their character to life.
Overall, the event was an incredibly fun experience to witness and I would love for more future events to integrate cosplay activities in them!
